This paper discusses the growth of militancy in Sinai in Egypt and contends that it is mainly due to alienation and neglect of the population on the part of the state and inadequate government responses to armed non-state actors in the territory. The author also addresses the national and regional implications of the security vacuum on the peninsula, especially for Egypt’s relations with Israel and Hamas.
