This paper examines the links between the political protests in Ukraine in early 2014 and street demonstrations in Turkey, Venezuela and other countries. The author argues that what links these protests is that they are taking place in middle-income countries, where political rules and democracy are still not well established and where the signs of return to authoritarianism can lead people to engage in potentially extra-legal protests.
