This paper discusses the effect of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster and the 2014 Ukraine crisis on Japan-Russia bilateral energy relations. The author contends that overall, Japan and Russia have managed to safeguard and develop bilateral relations in the wake of the crises, working together to maximize energy relations post-Fukushima and to minimize the potential negative consequences of the Ukraine crisis and Japan’s sanctions on bilateral relations.
