This article addresses Japan's effort to restore Japan to the status of a normal sovereign state with the right to individual and collective self defense under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and its implications for the country's regional relations. In general, the author contends that this effort is risky and it would be better for Japan to focus on how to improve its position in the region, such as by resolving its territorial disputes and by developing better relations with Indonesia and North Korea.
