This brief examines contract farming— or outgrower systems – in Sub-Saharan Africa, which involves the contracting out of food production to small-scale farmers by agricultural firms, and its impact on food security. The author also examines a case study on outgrower rice production in Ghana to identify best practices and recommendations for firms, farmers, and governments involved in contract farming.
