This paper discusses protected or conservation area governance systems in Africa, with a particular focus on how to increase the socioeconomic contributions such areas can provide for local communities and states in Africa. The authors also contend that it is important to highlight and further the potential economic benefits of such areas as this can secure support for the creation, continued existence and expansion of protected areas and inform decisions about the management priorities of conservation zones.
