This article addresses Northern Ireland’s December 2012 decision to restrict the number of days that the Union flag flies over City Hall and the subsequent riots in Belfast. The author argues that the ‘flag riots’ reflect something deeper than sectarian violence, namely a continued frustration with Northern Ireland’s long-term structural problems.
