This article argues that, unlike other recent uprisings throughout the Middle East and North Africa, the Syrian revolution has attracted no real allies. The author contends that this is partially attributable to the narrative being presented by self-interested external powers who have more to gain by portraying Syria’s violence as a fragmented quarrel among local interests instead of a mass rebellion against a repressive regime.
