This article discusses concerns over the nature of Japan’s security posture and shift away from the ‘neo-mercantilist’ policies it pursued during the Cold War. The author argues that the concerns miss the point and that Tokyo’s growing confidence abroad and commitment to liberal internationalism now make it an ideal partner for Britain and Europe.
