This brief examines the long-term effectiveness of UN peacekeeping operations arguing that they do indeed reduce the level of violence in conflict, the duration of conflict and the longevity of peace. The authors also contend that the increase in the deployment of UN peacekeeping forces since the end of the Cold War has been a key driver in the decline in the number and severity of armed conflicts since the mid-1990s. The authors also discuss the implications of their findings for UN peacekeeping policy.
