This paper explores how the expansion of higher education might result in a decline in the quality of degrees. More specifically, the authors look at three channels that expand tertiary eduction (lower entrance requirements, recruitment of staff with higher degrees and incentives to obtain a college degree) and how they are likely to reduce average study time, academic requirements and average wages, and inflate grades.
