This paper addresses what constitutes the definition of a replication test in economics. To do this, the author first provides a definition of replication and then contrasts it with previous definitions that were used in attempts to standardize terminology in the social sciences, before arguing that many prominent results in economic tests which are described as replication tests should not be described as such. The author also contends that the adoption of the definition of replication outlined in this paper can create incentives for researchers to collaborate in addressing the disagreements over their methods, something that would encourage improvement in replication tests.
