This essay argues that the middle class is good for good government and discusses what this means for the future of good government in middle- and low- income countries. The author contends that as long as reasonable growth continues and existing inequalities do not increase, middle-income countries are more likely to have more of the stability associated with democratic, participatory and accountable governments in the future. However, she also states that low-income countries are unlikely to see the development of such benefits brought about by the middle class even if they can enjoy another two decades of healthy growth.
