This brief looks at the challenges facing and shaping Australia’s economic policy and the country's role in regional institutions in the Asia-Pacific. More specifically, the author discusses how Australia’s economic policy-making is affected by the economic rivalry between its principal strategic partner – the US – and its main economic partner – China as well as by the growing competition among various regional institutions in the Asia-Pacific.
