This report discusses the potential for developing small and mid-size (SME) businesses in Moldova. The authors provide an economic overview of the county and analyze various best practices and lessons learned from the development of SMEs in Hungary. They then provide the description of economic development, main trade figures, relevant labor developments, migration and the role of remittances and define the bottlenecks for SME development in Moldova. Finally, they discuss potential intervention schemes for Moldovan stakeholders and offer recommendations for longer term initiatives and actions that would support economic and SME development in the country.
