This essay addresses the challenges likely to be faced by corporations and non-governmental organizations as they collaborate to implement the commitments they have made to create deforestation-free commodity supply chains. The author also draws lessons for how to tackle these challenges from US President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1913-14 expedition to explore the River of Doubt, a tributary of the Amazon River in Brazil.
