This brief examines options that Botswana has to diversify its economy in light of the likely decline of revenue from its diamond mining industry, upon which the country has depended since shortly after it gained independence. The author contends that while coal and potentially iron ore could provide new revenue streams over the short to medium term, tourism should become Botswana's main economic focus in the long run.
