In light of the growing economic and military power of China, this brief discusses the increasingly important bilateral relations and mutual interests India and Japan share regarding maritime security. The author explores the nature and history of these ties, focusing in particular on Japan and India's shared goal of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Indian Ocean while noting the concern the two countries have about China’s aggression in the region, which may jeopardize this freedom. In light of this, he argues that it is only natural for India and Japan to pool their efforts and resources in the maritime domain.
