The Arctic region is currently undergoing major and rapid transformation, both from an environmental as well as economic perspective. This paper discusses some of the political and security issues that are becoming increasingly important in the region as a result. Part 1 examines how climate change and economic potential are transforming the Arctic region. Part 2 discusses Arctic governance, common and competing interests in the region, and Russia's Arctic aspirations. Part 3 looks at the hard security developments that have emerged in the region and how to address these.
