This paper proposes a research project that examines how the struggle over socioeconomic issues shapes political transformation in Egypt and Tunisia. The authors first review the existing literature on the Arab Spring with a particular focus on the role of socioeconomic protests. They then present an analytical framework for studying the relationship between disputes around social and economic policies and political change, which also uses insights from studies on South American countries. Finally, they outline how one could go about investigating this relationship in the context of Egypt's and Tunisia's political transformation in the post-Arab Spring period.
