This article looks at what the level of attention generated by the arrest of FIFA officials in Switzerland in May 2015 says about the nature of power in contemporary international politics. The author argues that rather than being an empty distraction from more pressing geopolitical problems, the arrests illustrate a key feature of American soft power — i.e., the legal and diplomatic leverage the country enjoys is attributable to its status as a major marketplace.
