This brief examines the place of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) within the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the African Governance Architecture (AGA). More specifically, the authors 1) look at APRM’s successes and limitations; 2) contend that despite its problems, the APRM is a respected brand and as such, it can play an important role in supporting democracy and good governance in Africa; 3) suggest that the APRM must be reinvigorated if it is to help achieve better governance in Africa; and 4) discuss what needs to be done to strengthen the APRM. The APRM is a mechanism that offers a platform for citizens to engage with officials on governance issues, thereby facilitating public debate.
