This brief examines the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and how it is applied by companies involved in South Africa's mining industry. The author discusses 1) what CSR is in a global context; 2) the role of CSR in South Africa's mining industry; and 3) the key challenges facing CSR implementation in this sector. Overall, she contends that the current CSR agenda and the way it is practiced may not be suitable to effectively address social problems and deliver socioeconomic development plans in South Africa.
