This report questions the widespread depiction of an 'assertive' China. By comparing one of the country’s most prominent conflicts (the one with the Philippines) with one that hardly ever makes it into the headlines of international media (the conflict with Malaysia), the text's author concludes that Chinese behavior towards another country is actually shaped by the latter's previously-voiced perceptions of and actions towards China.
