This brief assesses the US presidential candidates’ foreign policy views, particularly in relation to the Middle East. The challenges the successful candidate will eventually face are indeed familiar ones, include 1) trying to defeat ISIS; 2) rolling back Iran’s quest for regional hegemony, while also bringing an end to the Syrian conflict; 3) preventing fragile states and entities such as Egypt, Tunisia and the Palestinian Authority from outright collapsing; 4) accelerating Yemen’s embattled peace process; 5) helping stabilize Libya, and 6) finding mechanisms that will manage to reduce Israeli-Palestinian tensions.
