This paper analyzes the rationale behind Russia’s pivot towards Asia – i.e., the pragmatic need to accommodate China, the equally important need to exploit economic opportunities, and the requirement to develop Russia’s lands east of the Urals. The author also describes how the pivot has progressed thus far and the problems/risks associated with it.
