This brief argues that Xi Jinping’s tour of the Middle East at the beginning of 2016 and his unveiling of a new “Arab Policy” are indicative of a revised, more proactive interest by Beijing in the region. However, while China may just want to leverage its commercial and energy interests, it may soon find itself increasingly embroiled in the area’s divisive geopolitics.
