This paper examines how well US national and theater missile defense systems have to perform in order to meet reasonable defense objectives. The author outlines ballistic missile threats and defines ballistic missile defense performance criteria and countermeasures to ponder the question of how much national missile defense is enough. The paper also analyzes how much upper-tier and airborne boost-phase theater ballistic missile defense is required for US defense purposes.
