This paper looks at the inroads the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) has made in adjusting to the ongoing refugee and migrant crisis, particularly when it comes to honing a more comprehensive approach to the problem. The text’s author particularly focuses on Operation EUNAVFOR MED ‘Sophia’, a European response which he argues illustrates a growing AFSJ-CSDP nexus. Indeed, not only has the existing civilian crisis management approach of Frontex migrated into the military realm in operations such as Sophia, but EU planners have responded to the migration problem by basically creating a semi-militarized European Border and Coast Guard.
