This report provides a comprehensive summary of the key global trends and patterns in terrorism between 1998 and 2017. More specifically, it describes 1) global and regional trends in terrorism; 2) the emerging hotspots of terrorism; and 3) patterns in terrorist recruitment. Key insights include 1) that deaths from terrorism decreased by 27 per cent from 2016 to 2017; 2) Europe had the biggest year on year percentage improvement, with total deaths falling by 75 per cent in 2017; 3) the so-called Islamic State remained the deadliest terrorist group in 2017, even though deaths attributed to the group fell by 52 per cent from the prior year, and more.
