This paper analyzes the motivations and strategic intentions of India and Pakistan to conduct nuclear tests in 1998. The author draws upon Chinese sources to conduct his study and includes an assessment of the consequences of these nuclear tests for the global trend of nuclear arms reduction and non-proliferation as well as the peace and stability of South Asia and the world. The author particularly emphasizes China's role in the nuclear developments in South Asia.
