This paper assesses the prospects for peace in the Middle East in the post-Arafat era. As a new generation of Palestinian leaders assumes power, new opportunities arise, but also new challenges. The author touches upon a number of different actors involved. The roles of governmental instances (Israel, the Palestinian National Authority (PA), Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iran, the EU and the US) are discussed as well as the roles of factions operating mainly domestically inside the PA (Hamas, Islamic Jihad). The assessment is concluded by a set of recommendations to the key actors in the region.
