This paper discusses national security and stability in Afghanistan after the ousting of the Taliban regime. In the run-up to Afghanistan's first direct democratic elections, signs indicate that stability is everything but guaranteed. The process of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration is lagging, narcotics trade constitutes the economic foundation and warlords have free reign.
