This paper analyzes the official Russian approach toward dealing with the Chechen republic. In the aftermath of the Beslan school hostage crisis, the author examines the potential for change in the official policy towards separatist movement in the North Caucasus region. The paper states that while the iron fist policy has proven counterproductive, amending the policy is key to long-term normalization of Chechen society. The author outlines the realities that should be considered by such a revised policy.
