This paper discusses the homeland security efforts undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security, which was introduced, together with the Patriot Act, in the aftermath of the 11 September 2001 attacks. The author points out the shortcomings in domestic security measures, the ineffectiveness of the intelligence community and the lack of security measures abroad. The paper details the danger of sacrificing civil liberties and freedoms - core values of the Western world, including the US - for the sake of "improved security."
