This case study presents an examination of past and current events in the North Causasus. The author reviews the historical antecedents of conflict in the region, giving special emphasis to Russian policy in Chechnya. He further discusses the interplay of regional dynamics, Russia's past and current policy toward Islam, as well as the trends that may pose risks to regional stability, including terrorism.
