This paper analyzes rural development and livelihood options for the poor in the context of diversification, social change and migration. The author reviews theories on agricultural modernization and diversification and the structural transformation of economies. He also assesses how these different theories explain the impacts of changes on rural livelihoods. The study concludes with an examination of societal processes that act to constrain or enhance access to opportunity.
