This paper examines the design and functioning of poverty monitoring systems in Tanzania. The study describes distinctive and limiting features of poverty and the way these monitoring systems are embedded institutionally and politically. It concludes with the design and evolution of poverty monitoring systems across in several countries and makes some specific recommendations for Tanzania.
