This paper discusses Russia's attempt to build a post-communist union of states after the Cold War using the political body of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The author offers a strategic assessment of the geopolitical situation of the Caucasus region and describes the political reaction of different countries to Russia's influence in the CIS. The paper concludes that international acceptance of the CIS as a regional organization has been hampered by Russia's dominance of the organization and that the CIS is seen as a cover for Moscow's imperial intentions.
