This paper examines the lessons learned by the US armed forces in different conflicts since the failed "Desert One" operation in 1980. The paper concludes that the main praise for building an increasingly flexible and effective force, must go to the military officers who rebuilt US military capabilities after the Vietnam War and the task of the next generation of military leaders is to learn as effectively as their predecessors learned from past conflicts.
