This paper discusses the impact of China's entry into the World Trade Organization on the country’s long-term development and its relations with its Asian neighbors and the United States. The author argues that it is unrealistic to expect that China will not modernize its military and use it to enhance its international influence. He also points out that a strong, stable China is likely to cooperate with Asian neighbors to maintain regional peace and stability. The paper concludes that China will show little change in the short-run and that encouraging domestic reforms ultimately serves US interests.
