This paper examines the impact of European integration on insular regions and their destinct ethnic and cultural composition. The authors compare and contrast the well established case of Corsica with the Åland Islands in the Baltic Sea. The paper analyzes whether European integration constitutes a threat to island communities or, on the contrary, can offer improved opportunities for insular populations.
