This report addresses the aggravation of inter-ethnic tensions in Macedonia during the first half of 2001 and plans to overcome these tensions. The paper summarizes the chain of events, introduces the ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army (NLA) and the Macedonian government as the key actors and discusses proposals for negotiation. Subsequently, the paper reviews consequences of the crisis, including ethnic violence, economic losses and regional repercussions. The paper argues that the EU and the US must undertake much stronger action to prevent the destruction of Macedonia.
