This publication examines the relationship between population pressure and political violence in India. The author uses a time-series study of 27 Indian states for the period of 1956-2002 to test if violent conflict may be related to high population pressure on renewable natural resources, youth bulges and differential growth rates between ethnic and religious groups. He finds that higher risks of political violence are associated with scarcity of productive land, youth bulges and relatively high Hindu growth rates.
