This paper examines the political situation in the southern Philippines and discusses the conflict between the government and Muslim guerrillas. The author argues that an analysis of the political and socio-economic framework of the civil war can only expose its dynamics to a very limited degree, as it ignores the microdynamics through which it is integrated as a prominent part of a complex multidimensional system of violence. The paper concludes that a way out of violence in the region is difficult to find.
