This paper studies the link between production transfer in Swedish-headquartered multinational enterprises (MNEs) and skill upgrading in Swedish manufacturing in the 1990s. The analysis distinguishes between foreign direct investment to member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and non-members. In doing so, the author finds that increased employment in non-OECD affiliates has significantly boosted skill upgrading in Swedish manufacturing MNE parents.
