This paper examines the effect of technological change and international trade on skill upgrading within the Swedish manufacturing sector. It describes changes in the wage and employment shares of skilled and unskilled workers since the 1970s, discusses explanations and tests an empirical model for these trends. The analysis results show that trade with low-wage countries has contributed to the rise in inequality in Swedish manufacturing.
