This study examines the dependence of modern industrial economies on carbon-based energy systems and its impact on global warming. The author discusses the field of industrial ecology, which addresses industrial activity as an integral part of ecological systems, and several proposed solutions to promote the efficient energy consumption of modern industries. He also considers the limits and potential risks of exclusively adopting political solutions to redress global warming and warns against the politicization of the climate issue. The author recommends a pragmatic approach that emphasizes the congruence of scientific facts and the public interest.
