This report studies the role of political Islam in Turkey. The authors examine the evolution of the Islamist-oriented Justice and Development Party (AKP) as well as the AKP's relation with the EU. They conclude that an overwhelming majority of the party sees the EU as the primary anchor of Turkish democracy and modernization. However, they also find a growing mistrust toward the EU as a result of perceived discrimination and EU double standards.
