This article on political Islam and Europe raises the question of how actors such as the EU and the US can deal with Islamists who reject violence, embrace democracy and outperform their competitors at the polls. The authors first identify who the Muslim democrats are and how they view the EU and the US. He then compares Muslim and Western conceptions of democracy and human rights to conduct a cost/benefit analysis of engagement with Muslim democrats and concludes that there is a need for the EU to clarify its policies toward the Mediterranean region and Muslim democrats within it.
